    Description

This item is a wonderful, original letter, dated Berryville, Virginia, Sept. 14th, 1864, where Surgeon Edwin Brush of the 2nd Vermont has written home to his wife Amy.....he writes about a skirmish about 6 miles out from Berrysville, great details of a mortar shell blowing up near him and the casualties incurred, the Cavalry in the back, General Custer captured 16 or 18 wagons from the rebs...signed on third page Edwin....letter is three pages, original envelope, 6x9, overall good condition.
General Custer’s infamy in the Winchester Valley Campaign increased when one of his cavalry charges proved to be decisive at the battle of Opequon Creek,(a few days after this letter was written) resulting in the capture of 700 Confederates. By now Custer was so hated in the Shenandoah that Sheridan warned him against getting captured. ‘If the Rebs should ever lay you by the heels, they’ll string you up directly.’
