vintage 1925
photogravure
by the famous photographer Wilhelm Von Gloeden also known as Baron Wilhelm Von Gloeden. While best known for his male nudes, Von Gloeden occasionally photographed female nudes as well, albeit to a lesser extent - his vintage female nudes are quite scarce and rarely seen in any form (silver gelatin or photogravure). The settings for his female nude studies were essentially the same outdoor settings in and around Taormina that he utilized for his male nudes. His poses for both sexes were typically inspired by classic Greek art. Von Gloeden achieved fame and wealth from his photography during his lifetime and he is now critically acclaimed for his ground breaking turn of the century work. More than three quarters of his work was destroyed during the second World War by the ruling fascist authorities who labeled his work as pornographic (Von Gloeden died in 1931 and willed his estate to his favorite model) - which has made his surviving work all the more rare today.
Finephoto is pleased to offer this rare collection of outstanding nude studies which were carefully selected and assembled in 1924/25 by Dr. Peter Landow in Berlin, Germany. With a search spanning from Europe and Africa to distant South Pacific Islands, Landow sought the finest in nude photography from the world's greatest photographers. In 1925 after a lengthy selection process, the resulting 120 images were printed in the finest quality sepia toned gravure to the highest archival standards
. The paper is of superb quality and the prints themselves are simply beautiful to behold. This vintage collection contained what many would consider to be the finest examples of artistic nude photography of the early 20th century, from some of the most talented artists of the era.
This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Archive & Database.
Under magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb" grid, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure print.
The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print.

So, if you decide to use the Best Offer option in those listings which contain one and make us a reasonable offer, we will do our best to accept.
ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE:
Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph.
Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today.
From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
