Description
2" in diameter and 1" thick, weighing 5.7 ounces, an English pocket compass and barometer made for the French trade. Sold by E.B. Mayrowitz, a high end optical goods purveyor in NY, Paris and London. The compass face is mother of pearl and has a stop-slide which is working. The barometer appears to be functioning as well, with a compensating wheel, but has a cracked glass. The side is engraved, "Robert Peet Skinner from the Buck-Eye State October the Fourteenth 1926".Skinner was born in Ohio in 1866 and had a long career as a US Diplomat in Europe, including Consul General in Marseille from 1901-08, Consul General in Hamburg from 1908-14, Consul General at US Embassy in Berlin in 1914, Consul General at Embassy in London from 1914-24, Ambassador to Greece from 1926-32, Ambassador to Estonia from 1931-33, Ambassador to Latvia from 1931-33, Ambassador to Lithuania from 1931-33 and finally Ambassador to Turkey from 1933-36.
