La Casa de Moneda de Mexico is the oldest mint to open on the American continents.
Established by viceroy Antonio de Mendoza of Spain in 1535, the mint was mandated by King Charles I, who was eager to open the first New World mint. For the next 400 years, silver eight-reales and pesos circulated widely across the Americas and into Asia.
In 1947, the Mexican government unveiled a silver 5 pesos coin called the Cuauhtemoc. Three years later, a five pesos coin commemorating the Southern Railroad was released, which put an end to the Cuauhtemoc series. As 1950 drew to a close, the Mexican Mint introduced the silver Hidalgo, which circulated from 1951 - 1957. In 1955, the coin's silver content was decreased and the open wreath was removed from the coin's design. A motto and reeding were added to its edge. Today, all Mexican coins are produced in San Luis Potosi, though the mint is headquartered at the Museo Nacional de las Culturas in Mexico City.
Composed of 72% pure silver, with an ASW of .6430 troy ounces, each coin arrives in extra fine condition or better with random picked years.
The obverse of each Mexican 5 pesos features the left-facing profile of Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, leader of the Mexican War of Independence. On the 1951 - 1954 issue, Hidalgo is encircled by a wreath. Each coin measures 40 mm in diameter and weighs 27.78 grams.
The reverse of each silver Hidalgo features the Mexican coat of arms: an eagle with a snake in its beak, standing atop a prickly pear cactus. It is inscribed with the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS", or United Mexican States, along with "CINCO PESOS" and the year of issue. Each coin is stamped with its silver content (LEY 720) and the Mexico City Mint mark, Mo.
