Abner Doubleday [1819 1893] was a United States Army officer and Union major general in the American Civil War and is considered to be the inventor of the game of baseball in a cow pasture in Cooperstown, New York in 1839. Abner Doubleday is also credited with firing the first shot in the defense of Fort Sumpter upon the opening of the American Civil War. Listed for auction is a stunning display which contains a authenticated [ALS] autograph letter signed by Abner Doubleday. The letter is dated April 25, 1878 and reads as follows, ''Dear Sir, I am sorry I was not in when you called to see me and am glad you added my name to your memorial. Yours very truly A. Doubleday'' in fountain pen. The letter
measures 8.00 x 5.00 inches, it has expected mail folds otherwise it is in fine condition and displays wonderfully. The letter has been authenticated by JSA Authentication Services and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The display is centered around an attractive b/w image [5.00 x 8.00] of Abner Doubleday in his Union military uniform. Mounted next to the photograph is the written letter as described above and mounted below is a professionally engraved metal plaque which reads as follows, ''Abner Doubleday June 26, 1819 - January 26, 1893. A career United States Army officer and Union major general in the American Civil War. He fired the first shot in the defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war, and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg''. The display itself is stunning and has been professionally assembled and triple matted in all acid free materials as follows. The outer matte is a gold linen and it has been accented with a brown and a gold inner matte. The display has been assembled in a quality ornate gold wood frame to the dimensions of 18.00 x 16.00 inches.
