Description
Up for sale is a vintage Alabama State Flag that was flown over the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, Alabama. The flag is accompanied by a notarized affidavit signed by Mills Cowling, Chief of Service of the Alabama Department of Finance, dates August 30, 1973. Interestingly, this flag is 4ft x 4ft square. The legislation authorizing Alabama’s state flag did not specify a square or rectangle flag. Therefore the shape of the flag came under debate. Since the flag was modeled after the Confederate flag, which is a battle flag and battle flags were usually square, this fueled the debate. To end the confusion and debate, in 1987 the Alabama Department of Archives and History asked the Office of the Alabama Attorney General to investigate and issue an official opinion on the shape of their state flag, and the opinion established that the modern Alabama state flag should be rectangular in shape. As such, this vintage flag is an interesting historical artifact. The flag will be shipped free of charge via USPS Priority Mail. Please ask any questions before bidding as all sales will be final and I cannot accept any returns.
