Description
This auction is for an Extremely Rare and Early Blue and White Transferware Earthenware Lidded Soup Tureen with figural lion heads at the lid and side handles made in the early 1800s by Robert Hamilton of Staffordshire England in the company’s pattern titled The Philosopher. The pattern depicts a classic rural village scene with an orator and another man in Roman or Greek robes speaking at the ruins of a temple with a bridge and water falls, several other people and cows and a Wild Rose floral boarder.
The piece was a recent estate sale discovery near Lancaster, Pa. and is Fresh to Market.
It is a Rare Find. I have been unable to locate another example of this tureen anywhere.
It measures about 13 inches long, including the two side lion head handles, and is about 8 inches tall, including the lion head finial.
It has condition issues. The lid is in Very Good condition with only three small nicks to the underside. The tureen has several large repaired / glued cracks and associated loss of transfer pattern on the outside. The two side handles also have glaze loss / roughness around the lions’ mouths.
Please look closely at all the photos and enlarge them. I tried to capture all the angles.
Even with the issues, the piece Displays Nicely and is a Great Example of early Staffordshire blue and white earthenware.
The piece is not marked with the exception of what might be a cypher stamp on the bottom. The pattern was produced by Robert Hamilton of Stoke England circa 1811.
