CHARLES MOTTRAM (1807-1876) Engraving "Off Portland" in Hand Carved Shell Frame

I am very pleased to be offering for your consideration this striking antique, nautical-themed engraving in a stunning hand carved frame featuring a scalloped seashell border.  Fortunately, there are a number of very old paper labels en verso, which help to explain the history of this piece.  The engraver was listed artist, Charles Mottram (British, 1807-1876), while the image, which is entitled "Off Portland" was created by another British listed artist, John Wilson Carmichael (1800-1868).   Taken together, I believe the piece dates to around the 1870's -- indeed, one of the labels indicates that the image was published in 1871 (both in London and New York).  The frame measures approximately 40" by 30 3/4," with a site measurement of approximately 27" by 17."  I would say that the image is in very good condition for its age, with minor, but typical discoloration given its age. The frame is also in very good with a few minor nicks and scuffs as pictured.  If you are looking for a dramatic antique engraving with a one of a kind hand carved frame to grace your walls, look no further.
