DESCRIPTION:
Offered for sale is this very exciting German Modernist black and white abstracted figurative woodblock print, that has many of the hallmarks and signature characteristics that embody German Modernist figurative art and German Expressionism. The rather large work is pencil signed by German artist Charlie (Charles) Renner of Kassel, Germany. The work, like many of Renner's Modernist contemporaries, refuses to be didactic, easy visual poetry and demands to remain enigmatic and mysterious. There's no easily attainable or decipherable narrative attached to the figurative imagery. The viewer is left on their own to struggle with derivative, possible meanings and to assign it some kind of understanding. Aside from the obvious, that being two interacting figures and a chair, where a very strange, cat-headed female figure appears to have slid off the same side chair and fallen onto the ground, only to be offered assistance by a hollow faced and even scarier second figure. Dreamlike or nightmarish, take your pick. Regardless, this period vintage German Modernist woodblock print is compelling and loaded with intrigue and mystique. If an alternate reality is what you're seeking, then possibly this German woodblock can help you get to where it is that you are going. Splendid.
