Bellamy Eagle Lapel PinAMERICAN, ca. 1900
From the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum
Our pin is based on a wood and painted eagle carved by John Haley Bellamy, ca. 1900. According to the law of 1782, the shield is born of the breast of the American eagle without any supporters, to denote that the United States of America should rely on its own virtue. The colors of the
shield are those used in the American flag. White signifies purity and innocence; red, hardiness and valor, and blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice
