Description
- American Sculptor of MOUNT RUSHMORE -- Gutzon Borglum SIGNED + INSCRIBED Engraving -
- Abraham Lincoln’s BUST in the U. S. Capitol Rotunda -
- Inscribed to John Singer Sargent’s cousin, Margarett Sargent -
VERY RARE
signed + inscribed
engraving on tissue paper of
Gutzon Borglum’s
celebrated bust of ABRAHAM LINCOLN that stands in the CAPITOL ROTUNDA in Washington D.C.
The engraving is
SIGNED
(in pencil) along the bottom left margin
by sculptor,
Gutzon Borglum
. It is also
SIGNED
(in pencil) and
dated
(1909)
along the bottom right margin
by the engraver,
Howard McCormick
.
The engraving is wonderfully
inscribed and dated
(in ink) in Gorglum’s
own hand
,
“For Margarett Sargent / 1917”
- the
cousin of the noted artist John Singer Sargent
. This signed engraving was
likely a presentation piece to Margarett Sargent who had worked in Gutzon Borglum’s art studio during the summer of 1917, the same year as the inscription
. PRINTED within the engraving itself, at lower right, is the following,
“Gutzom Borglums LINCOLN Engraved Howard McCormick”
. Also, just above Borglum’s signature (within the engraving itself) are some PRINTED words that I cannot make out.
Gutzon Borglum’s colossal marble bust, “
The Head of Lincoln
”, was carved from a six-ton block of stone. Originally exhibited in Theodore Roosevelt’s White House, Borglum’s sculpture is now on display in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. It is generally considered one of the best likenesses of our 16th President ever produced. Following his study in France at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Borglum returned to New York in 1901 and soon after received his commission for the Lincoln statue.
Howard McCormick (1875 – 1943)
was an Indiana-born painter and printmaker. After studying abroad in Paris, he returned to the U.S. and found ready employment as an
illustrator for magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Collier’s, The Saturday Evening Post, and Ladies’ Home Journal
. McCormick took up wood engraving in 1907, and he would lead somewhat of a revival in that once popular form of illustrative technique.
Margarett Sargent (1892 – 1978
was an American artist, socialite, and cousin of the famous American painter, John Singer Sargent.
Margarett Sargent worked in the Connecticut studio of sculptor
GUTZON BORGLUM
during the summers of 1917 and 1918
.
CONDITION
- the engraving is framed to an overall size of about 21 ½ x 25 inches. The actual tissue paper engraving is matted to a minimum size of 10 x 13 ½ inches, but is probably larger as I have not examined it out of the frame. There are NO rips or tears in the engraving that I can observe.
PLEASE NOTE: there is some scattered purple shading (on the bust of Lincoln) in some of my scans that is NOT present on the actual engraving itself
.
Gutzon Borglum’s signature / autograph is guaranteed authentic

I have been buying + selling American historical autographs & documents for over 30 years and a former member of both the “Manuscript Society” and the UACC. We ship everything INSURED (thru the USPS) with a value over . This helps us know that the item you took the time to purchase arrived safely. Packages are shipped out within 1 – 3 business days, but typically the next day. Please understand, we do not make any money on shipping costs, but rather run a deficit over the course of a year. Most people don’t realize that ebay deducts a FEE of about 13.5% from BOTH the winning bid AND from my stated shipping charges (leaving around 87% of that shipping charge to be used for actual postage + insurance). Everything we sell is packaged with the utmost care. Please read my ebay feedback over the last 20 years. The comments are often – the best packaging I have ever seen or “bullet proof” packaging. We do NOT offer returns for one simple reason. In the past, I have had some buyers purchase items from me and then proceed to shop them around during the return period to try and make a fast profit, without any financial risk. After they were unsuccessful, they returned the item to me. This information, however, made it back to me from different people I know who were directly offered my item immediately after I had sold it and before it was returned to me. Bid with confidence! You will receive the exact item pictured and in the same condition as described in my listing.
