James Rizzi, Lost In a Concrete Jungle (signed and numbered)
James Rizzi (October 1950 December 2011) was an American pop artist who was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Rizzi graduated from University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He came up with the idea of 3D multiples now mostly associated with his name when, having taken classes in painting, printmaking and sculpturing, he had to hand in grade work for all three subjects, but only had time for doing one. So he created an etching, printed it twice, hand colored it, and mounted parts of the one print on top of the other, using wire as a means of adding depth. Having received good grades from all three teachers, he stuck with the idea and developed it further.
Rizzi was most famous for his 3D artwork, "especially the large, elaborate prints and teeming anthropomorphic cityscapes. His merry maximalism and delight in delirious detail and elaborate minutiae created a true art brand, a trademark style as recognizable as any in the world. [wikipedia]
If you are familiar with Rizzi's work you understand the amazing contribution he made to the world of art. There are many famous artists, each extremely gifted, each leaving a legacy of grace and beauty for future generations to admire and enjoy. Rizzi however was not content with taking one small step for artists, and instead took one giant leap for the art world with his own personal 3D art style.
This signed, numbered, and dated limited edition of his 3D artwork "Lost in a Concrete Jungle" has been sold out for years. There are other later editions of this work in smaller sizes but the original 350 pieces in the edition are the most sought after.
It is an amazing sight to look at, and you could probably look at it for two weeks straight, leave for a day, come back and see something you never saw before. There are two-hundred and sixty one (261) individually hand painted panels that make up this piece, ranging in size from 1/4" x 3/8" up to 4" x 5".
