    Description

    John Young Mason
    – Sec. of the Navy under Tyler and Polk, Attorney General under Polk, minister to France.  Signed document as Sec. of Navy, Nov. 21 1847 to Mr. A. C. Moore regarding an appointment for someone.  He signs the partially printed reply with a light hand and some fading to the signature “J. Mason”.    It is indicative of the pressure for appointments and  patronage that the response is pre-printed with candidate names, positions and current status to be filled in for individual circumstances.
