to William B. Rochester
, (1789-1838),
in Congress
from NY, 1821-1823; Ran for Governor of NY in 1826, but was narrowly defeated by DeWitt Cllinton; U.S. Minister to Columbia in 1826; President of the Branch Bank of the Second Bank of the U.S. at Buffalo, NY, 1828-1836;
Died in the wreck of the Steamer "Pulaski"

Good content in which Postmaster General McLean asks Congressman Rochester to look into the matter concerning Mr. Baldwin, the Postmaster of Bath, of whom he has heard reports that if true, "ought not to be continued in his present office", but since it is possible that the reports are the result of "some personal animosities", he wants Rochester to give his opinion and any information he can obtain about Mr. Baldwin's behavior.
The letter reads:
"Sir,
I have to solicit your attention to the enclosed papers, which relate to the conduct of Mr. Baldwin. If the representations be true, Mr. Baldwin ought not to be continued in his present office. Under the impression, however, that some personal animosities may have had some influence in making the statements, I have thought proper to submit the papers to you, and will thank you, for your opinion on the subject - and for any information as to the conduct of Mr. Baldwin, which you may be able to communicate.
I have the honor to be respectfully your obedient servant,
John McLean"
