Fiorello Henry La Guardia (born Fiorello Enrico La Guardia) (December 11, 1882 – September 20, 1947) was an American politician. He is best known for being the 99th Mayor of New York City for three terms from 1934 to 1945 as a Republican. Previously he had been elected to Congress in 1916 and 1918, and again from 1922 through 1930. Irascible, energetic, and charismatic, he craved publicity and is acclaimed as one of the three or four greatest mayors in American history. Only five feet, two inches (1.57 m) tall, he was called "the Little Flower" (Fiorello is Italian for "little flower").
Mr. Lewis (b. September 9, 1884, d. April 5, 1975), a graduate of the New York Law School, was a Democratic member of the State Assembly in 1913. He was elected to the Municipal Court in 1927 as a Democrat but 10 years later lost support of the regular organization. Although he ran independently with the support of many civic groups he was defeated. He then served briefly on the Domestic Relations bench by appointment of Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia.
He returned to New York Law to teach ethics and was for many years on the board of the Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association of Washington Heights and Inwood. ~ NY Times
