Damaged by flak and enemy fighters, and almost out of fuel, after a grueling eight hour mission the pilot of this B-17 Fortress makes a forced landing in the safety of an English cornfield. A pair of P-51 Mustangs that have escorted the damaged aircraft back across the North Sea, and peel off as they see their charge safely back on friendly soil.

This is one of my favorite paintings and is a scene that must have happened hundreds of times during WWII. P-51 Mustangs try and help a struggling B-17 back to base and although it doesn't quite make it to the runway, the crew are able to get it down just short, and all of them will live to fight another day. O
