Important Stone Lithograph by Paul Collins
Image from the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations during the Wounded Knee Uprising of the Sioux Nation, 1973 .
In 1972 Paul Collins relocated to the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations at the request of Frank Fools Crow, Head Chief of the Oglala Sioux to document the current state of the Native American. This drawing, Reservation , was reproduced in a limited edition of 50 hand-pulled stone lithographs plus artists proofs. It is an artist proof (AP) named and signed by the artist. After this very limited edition, the stone was defaced so that no other editions could ever be pulled.
Thirty oil paintings of the series “Other voices- A Native American Tableau” opened in New York and exhibited Paris .
During this time Collins found himself acting as a diplomatic liaison between the Sioux Nation and the United States government. With the help of Michigan representative, and friend, Guy VanderJact, the Sioux and other tribes honored Collins by making him a full brother, naming him: “Bright Eagle”. According to Frank Fools Crow, Head Chief of the Oglala Sioux, Collins’ series, “Other Voices –A Native American Tableau”, “reflects…the power, tradition, and beauty of the Indian Nation, as well as their struggles for justice, freedom, and human dignity.” Collins wrote and illustrated an article about the experiences in Ebony Magazine, June 1973.

Remember, this is not a poster print, serigraph or photographic type "lithograph". This is an original Stone Lithograph where the image has been transferred to a stone and then hand printed from the stone to the highest quality paper. A very desirable original piece of art and, in this case, a piece of Native American history
Collins, a native of Grand Rapids MI, is known for his ability to capture and celebrate human dignity and the diversity of cities, nations, and global communities worldwide. His drawings and paintings have been exhibited around the world, from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
Status of artist proofs:
Art historians, curators, and collectors view working proofs as especially desirable because of their rarity, the insight they may give into the progress of the work, and because they may well have belonged to the artist. Especially in the case of dead artists, they can be the only evidence of the artist's incremental development of an image, something not usually available with drawings, paintings, or sculpture. Some lithographs may be hand signed in the border and labeled "Epreuve D'Artiste", which means Artist's Proof, which also increases its value.
Collectors also usually prefer final artist's proofs even when they are identical to the main edition; if nothing else the print may have been presented to a friend by the artist. Prints are generally sold as limited editions, with a print being cheaper than a drawing or painting because the artist/gallery makes more money by selling multiples. An artist's proof has special value because of its extra rarity and its possible differences from the "standard" print, factors that are often reflected in its price.
The print will be shipped rolled in a mailing tube.
