Circa 1878 etching of Professor Benjamin Silliman in profile (Born Aug 1779, Died Nov 1864) after an oil painting by Daniel Huntington (Born Oct 1816, Died April 1906) which was completed in 1857. Written in ink below the image "Prof Benjamin Silliman, act. 78. From a painting by Daniel Huntington, 1857. No noted credit anywhere for the etching.
Benjamin Silliman is one of the most famous scientists of the 19th century and a graduate of Yale University, Co-Founder of the American Geological Society and creator of the American Journal of Science and Arts among other achievements.
The O.D. of the frame measures 12 5/8" x 11". Frame is missing some of its tiny ball trim. Shows some wear and needs conditioned. The etching has been pressed flat and the impression borders are very hard to see. Some minor spotting/foxing in the white areas, water stain lower right.
