"
Thank you for allowing me to read your Mark Twain letter to Mr. Bickers, dated 7 March 1896 from Jaipur, a city in a northern province of India.
In July 1895, Samuel L. Clemens began a year-long lecture tour that would take him, his wife, Olivia, and his daughter Clara to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Africa.
At the close of the grueling schedule, Clemens was able to repay all of the debts incurred years before as a result of risky investments.
The Clemens party, accompanied by lecture agent R.H. Smythe, arrived in Jaipur on March 1, and stayed at the Kaiser-i-Hind, 'a neat little hotel, kept by 9 Indian brothers, & wonderfully noisy.'
Although they planned to stay in Jaipur only briefly,
each member of the group fell ill in turn, Clemens with exhaustion and carbuncles
.
By March 7, Clemens was prepared to travel north to Lahore and resume his lecture schedule. But he was forced to postpone the trip
, as he explained in a letter to a friend who helped with the travel arrangements: 'We thought we could leave to-day;
wherefore I saw the station master yesterday evening & he said he had your orders & a carriage would be ready for us. However before noon to-day I was sending him word of our postponement.
For in the meantime Mr. Smythe had got into the doctor's hands.'
The station master referred to is none other than Mr. Bickers
; this letter of 7 March is Clemens's word of postponement.
In fact, departure plans were put off until
March 13, when Mark Twain would again write Mr. Bickers about travel arrangements
. Unfortunately, Clemens's own condition worsened and the
trip was further postponed until March 15
. Although the letters have not survived, it is likely that Clemens wrote Mr. Bickers both to cancel plans for March 14 and to arrange them for the following day.
Few letters by Mark Twain survive from the period of the 'round-the-world tour.' This letter is therefore of particular importance and rarity.
I hope that the information above will be of use to you.
