The beauty of a campfire is in watching its dance,” said Stephen Lyman. “The ethereal qualities are extreme, playing back and forth from the hottest part of the flame to the coolest shadowed crack in the rocks.”
Stephen Lyman’s passion for the wilderness is beautifully realized his evocative campfire images. The vertical reach of "Fire Dance" stretches the drama of this Yosemite mountainside scene to include expanses of both earth and sky. Light suffuses the air and sweeps through the sky on wisps of clouds while the mountain’s flanks glow with warmth.
“The alpenglow, rocks, trees, snow, clouds and dancing flames conspired to inspire me,” said Stephen Lyman. “The fire warmed me, it cheered me up and dried me out . . . the experience was beyond words.”

“All my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness.”
Stephen Lyman
Stephen Lyman was an explorer who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature. His work was inspired by the writing and teaching of famous naturalist John Muir. Lyman’s love of the outdoors stemmed from his childhood spent in the Pacific Northwest, where a regular family ritual was hiking in Snake River country.
In 1995 he was named one of the top artists in the country by U.S. Art magazine and his book, Into the Wilderness: An Artist’s Journey, was published to unanimous acclaim in the autumn of 1995. He was a frequent participant in the prestigious international “Birds of Art” show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He was invited to be “Artist of the Year” at the 1991 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show and then received the rare honour of being invited back as an “Encore Artist” at the 1995 event.
Stephen Lyman died tragically on April 16, 1998 from a hiking accident in Yosemite National Park.
