Description
A nice antique c1900 hand coloredChine-colle photogravure
of the First Railroad Train on the Mohawk and Hudson Road which was painted by Edward Lamson Henry.
E. L. Henry was famous for his genre scenes and liked to depict events from recent U.S. history.
The first railway train was Edward's largest and most famous piece. It was made for the World's Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in 1893 and was made to be exhibited in the Transportation Building. It commemorated the first trip using a steam locomotive on the route from Albany to Schenectady nearly six decades earlier. The pictured train is the DeWitt Henry.
The original painting by Edward Henry was thought to be based off of a lithograph that itself was based off a silhouette picture made at the original location.
This is an exceptional piece for what it is, matted and framed, that presents quite well. The brass plate identifying the work suggests it was displayed at some point in a more official capacity such as a bank, law firm or government office building. The dimensions are 20 3/8" high x 41 1/2" Long OD on the frame and the visible image size is 13 3/4" x 34 1/2".
