The North American X-15 was a rocket powered aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force and the NASA as part of the X-Plane experimental aircraft series. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of space and returning with valuable data which was eventually used in Space Shuttle program. As of 2014, the X-15 holds the official world record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned, powered aircraft. Its maximum speed was 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h)

In this scene from 1960 we see Scott Crossfield as he shakes down the X-15 after repairs made, from the previous hard landing which broke the bird in two. Seen here still wearing the primer paint on its back where the panels were replaced.

About the Artist
