Norwegian Blue Enameled Sterling
Silver Thimble
by Aksel Holmsen * Mid 1900s
This lovely thimble is sterling silver and has enameled sides of marine blue. An
engine turned design in the silver shows through the translucent enamel and is
known as guilloche enamel
. The top has waffled knurling. The rim
is stamped
"925 S" for sterling silver and it has the maker's mark for Aksel Holmsen.
This is an unusual thimble for Holmsen. The top is domed without the faux collar that most of his waffle top thimbles have. The guilloche design under the enamel is also different and more ornate than his usual. The condition is excellent with no wear or damage to the silver or enamel
. It's about an American size 8 (14.9 mm opening). Dan Walbrun shows some of these alternative thimbles by Holmsen on p. 60 of his book
