Description
This incredibly dazzling Fostoria “American” pattern elegant glass salver was one of the most successful patterns in tableware history. “American” was introduced in 1915 with production continuing until the 1983 purchase of their factory by Lancaster Colony. Lancaster continued to press the pattern until 1986, when the moulds were sold to Dalzell-Viking Glass Co., which made select pieces of the pattern through the late 1990s. Knowing the difference between the old Fostoria pieces, newer Fostoria and look-alikes can be challenging. Just remember that Fostoria “American” is elegant glass, and as such, quality is paramount and is defined by finish and clarity, both are crucial. Fostoria employed fire polishing which is essentially the reintroduction of a fresh piece of glass into the furnace to soften edges and smooth surfaces; equivalent to running ice under water, Fostoria’s elegant glass should look and feel silky and smooth. The ring around the bottom should be ground and smooth. Clarity, the other distinction, is dependent upon the glass formula used to produce molten glass. Fostoria called their uncolored “American” glass “crystal” so the highest quality "crystal American” pieces should resemble inert water. Of note, Fostoria is one of the elegant makers that continued using manganese in their clear glass! This beauty is in pristine condition with no noticeable wear or flaws. It measures 10” x 7” top diameter/height; pedestal base bottom diameter 6”; color is crystal clear and luminous; weight 4¾ lbs.
