    Description

    Handwritten letter from missionary William Ellis (1794-1872) to Liverpool minister Thomas Raffles (1788-1863) while in Hoddesdon in 1846. Ellis was known for his missionary travels to Hawaii and Madagascar. In between those two endeavors, he was pastor of the Congregational church in Hoddesdon and in these letter he writes of his experiences with the poor and the agricultural labourers there. Raffles helped fundraise for Ellis' missionary throughout the latter's life.
    From the collection of Captain Peter Johnston-Saint, who worked for many years as an agent collecting on behalf of Sir Henry Wellcome. This collection was purchased at the Sotheby's December 10th, 2019 sale.
